2010 Rattlesnake Ramble Adventure Race - FAQ
GET BIT! - July 18, 2010
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the distance of the race?
There is no way to know the exact distance of the course. Since each team can choose to go a different way, the total distance traveled will vary from team to team. The total distance will be approximately 40 – 50 miles.
Where are we racing and what are we going to be doing?
You will get that information 60 minutes prior to the race start. You will be given general information (i.e. canoeing, biking, running, rollerblading, etc..). Part of the “adventure” is not knowing what to expect.
What level of race is this?
This is a sprint-distance race. It is designed to be a great introductory race for the beginner, but also providing enough of a challenge for the experienced athlete.
This is also an un-supported race. Teams will be required to carry all gear at all times with only a few exceptions.
What gear is needed for this race?
A full gear list will be provided after December 18, 2009. This list will detail what items each team needs and what items the race will provide.
What gear will race officials transport?
Race officials will ONLY transport bikes, paddles, and the canoe. Team members must carry all other gear at all times. Teams CANNOT strap gear to their bike in order for race officials to transport. For example, you cannot strap your cycling shoes to the back of your bike and have us transport them. If you want to use cycling shoes during the race, you need to be able to carry them throughout the race. The only exception to this rule will be for items that are designed to be attached to a bike. These items include bike pumps, water bottle cages, and bike bags. At check-in, race officials must approve any items attached to the bike.
Is there any swimming involved?
Yes, some sort of swimming could be required. Please make sure all team members are comfortable in the water while wearing a PFD.
What is a “runner” for our canoe?
A runner is simply a length or rope used to secure your items to the canoe should it tip over.
Do I need to wear my helmet while canoeing?
Yes, you need to wear a helmet while canoeing. Your bicycle helmet is acceptable to wear.
Can I ask race officials for help on the course?
If you need help, please seek out any race official. Race officials are there to assist the race, however, they cannot be asked questions such as “Where is the next checkpoint?” or “Which way do I go?” The race officials along the course are there to aid you when possible. Please do not try to take advantage of the volunteer by trying to get some information out of them.
Will water be provided along the course?
Do not plan on having water provided for you. There are several locations along the course where you can obtain water from drinking fountains. Race officials will have a few locations where water will be made available, but please, for safety reasons, plan on carrying your own.
Do all team members do all the events?
Yes. This is not like a team triathlon relay where one person does the canoeing, and then another does the biking. All team members do all the events. At no time are team members allowed to be more than 100 feet apart.
Do we need to carry our PFD’s with us at all times?
Yes. So please plan accordingly. You may want to practice carrying it while you train.
What other gear should we bring to the race?
It is recommended that you bring anything and everything that you may need for the race. Once you receive your maps and race information at the pre-race meeting, you can determine what additional gear you will need, and what gear you can leave back in your vehicle.
Where can I purchase the items I will need for the race?
Most items required for the race can be purchased at your local sporting goods store. For a list of local stores, please reference your local “Yellow Pages”.
Why the name “Rattlesnake Ramble”? Does it have some sort of significance?
Yes, it is significant. The Wheeling Historical Society can probably shed some light on the name (they provided the inspiration for it). If you are really interested, I am sure you can Google it and figure it out.
Can we rent PFD's from the Wheeling Park District?
The Wheeling Park District has 20 Adult PFD's that are available for rent for $5 for the day. First come first served. To reserve a PFD, please contact the Race Director.
