2010 Rattlesnake Ramble Adventure Race - Rules

GET BIT! - July 18, 2010

Race Rules

All participants must be at least 16 years old on race day.

Each team must have three members. All teams must be co-ed with either 2 males and 1 female, or 1 male and 2 females.

No paths, streets, parks, rivers, lakes, or any other property are closed for the race. Therefore, all racers must obey the laws and ordinances that govern each location.

All participants must sign a waiver/release, and a document acknowledging that they understand and accept the rules and risks associated with this race, and accept financial liability for damage to equipment provided by race organizers. Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent/legal guardian permission to participate.

At check-in, race officials must confirm that the team is carrying mandatory equipment, and that equipment is in good working condition. Teams will not be allowed to compete if their gear is not found to be acceptable.

Racers cannot have phone or radio contact with anyone outside Race Control or Emergency Personnel (911).

No finishing team’s telephone seal may be broken or tampered with.

A missed checkpoint will result in a 2-hour penalty.

A missed unmanned checkpoint will result in a 1-hour penalty.

Stealing, or borrowing, another teams’ equipment without the consent of that team, will result in immediate disqualification.

In the event that teams are required to wait at a checkpoint due to the unavailability of equipment, or due to severe weather, the amount of time the team spent waiting will be documented by a race official, recorded in the team passport book, and subtracted from the teams’ overall time at the finish line.

Race officials and volunteers cannot be asked about the locations of checkpoints. Teams are entirely responsible for checking-in, and when required, checking-out at each checkpoint.

Racers must arrive at checkpoints as a team and have their check-in documented.

Racers must stay within 50 feet of each other at all times unless instructed otherwise by a race official.

Racers cannot litter at any time.

Racers must obey all traffic laws and traffic signals.

Racers cannot travel on or along railroads at anytime, and can only cross railroads at designated crossing areas.

Racers must use designated portages only.

Racers must wear PFDs at all times while on, or traveling over, water.

Any team that decides to drop out of the race must report to a checkpoint or call race officials.

In the event of serious injury, racers must call 911, contact race officials, and receive assistance from emergency personnel.

Team members will be financially responsible for damage to equipment provided by race organizers or sponsors.

The Rattlesnake Ramble, Wheeling Park District, and all volunteers cannot be held responsible for damage to racer equipment while in transport before, during, or after the race.

GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) Units are not allowed.

Only maps provided by the Race Officials will be allowed.

Race organizers and landowners are asking racers to minimize negative impacts to streams and woodlands. When crossing streams on foot, please take care to avoid damaging stream banks or creating additional erosion potential. When off-trail in woodlands, we request that racers spread out to prevent damage to ground cover and the creation of new footpaths. Tread lightly. Thank you.
