Controlled Burns Planned for Heritage Park
Naturalized sections of Heritage Park, located south of Dundee Road, west of South Wolf Road, and east of the North Central Service Metra railroad, will
be subject to prescribed burn management on one to two days between February 26, 2020, and May 15, 2020, weather permitting. Alternately, should weather
not fall within parameters during the spring burn season, the prescribed burn will occur on one to two days between November 1, 2020, and December
31, 2020. Burn management is dependent on weather conditions; thus, a specific date has not been set. Periodic burning of these natural areas is an
important part of the ecological management of the site.
The prescribed burns will be conducted in a safe and expeditious manner by trained and experienced personnel of V3 Companies. The burn plan calls for quick dispersal of the smoke. This activity is permitted by the Wheeling Fire Department and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.
The purpose of the burns is to improve the native plant communities by reducing the non‐native shrubs and weeds that invade and degrade the naturalized area communities. Conversely, prescribed burning also promotes the germination and growth of many native plant species that are adapted to and require periodic fire to maintain healthy natural communities. Prescribed burning is a technique widely used for the restoration and management of natural areas throughout the Midwest.
