Collaborative Greenhouse Project

We are excited to announce the construction of an Accessible Greenhouse, situated adjacent to the NWSRA Programming Space at the Wheeling Park District Community Center. The Wheeling Park District and Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA) have partnered to design, build and program this innovative greenhouse which will offer hands-on learning opportunities for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities. Programs will include gardening, hydroponics, and sustainable practices – in partnership with community volunteers to foster a sense of purpose and community. This project could not be possible without funding from SLSF, whose mission it is to support children and adults with disabilities through philanthropy for NWSRA.

The finishing touches are being added to the greenhouse. Electrical was installed, along with an environmental curtain and a black surrounding fence.

The greenhouse is nearing completion. Landscaping is wrapping up along with the interior work of the greenhouse.

The greenhouse project is almost finished! As you can see from the latest photo, the structure is fully assembled and in place, with only a few finishing touches remaining. The glass panels are in, and the area around the greenhouse has been prepped for landscaping and final adjustments.
The Greenhouse structure is fully enclosed with clear panels. While the interior setup is beginning to take shape, landscaping around the building is underway.
The greenhouse is steadily taking shape as the construction progresses. The metal frame, which forms the backbone of the structure, is fully in place, providing support for the installation of the glass walls and roof. Transparent panels are now being carefully installed on the walls, which will serve a dual purpose: providing essential insulation while allowing ample natural light to flood the interior. This combination ensures that the greenhouse will be both energy-efficient and conducive to plant growth.

Our staff have completed the following milestones:

  • Erecting the skeleton of the greenhouse: Staff can install exterior panels to close up the unit.
In the coming weeks, Staff hopes to install the venting panels, plumbing fixtures, and electrical items.

Our dedicated staff have successfully completed the following milestones:

  • Site Demolition: All necessary demolition work has been completed to prepare the site for construction.
  • Installation of New Site Utilities: Essential utilities have been installed, ensuring the Greenhouse will have the infrastructure needed for future operations.
  • Concrete Foundation and Slab: The concrete foundation and slab have been poured, providing a solid base for the Greenhouse structure.
