Wheeling Park District’s Day of the Dead 5k Run/Walk: A Community Celebration of Remembrance, Connection, and Cultural Appreciation
Wheeling, Illinois – On October 27, 2024, the Wheeling Park District brought its mission to life, creating memorable experiences in parks and recreation with the Day of the Dead 5K Run/Walk at Heritage Park. Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a vibrant Mexican holiday celebrating the lives of loved ones who have passed. Traditionally observed on November 1 and 2, the holiday is filled with colorful altars, marigolds, cavaleras (sugar skulls), and gatherings that celebrate life. The District’s event was more than a chance to run or walk through the scenic Heritage Park and Meadowbrook community; it was a heartfelt embrace of Wheeling’s diverse community, uniting participants of all backgrounds to honor life through remembrance, connection, and cultural appreciation.
This year, 459 runners gathered early in the morning, displaying painted faces, bright colors, and festive spirit. The event also featured dynamic performances by the Aztec Dance Chicago group, music from the Wheeling High School Mariachi band, the support of the Concilio Latinx, and lively entertainment by DJ Rico Mash and MC Jerry Riles. For many, the event was an opportunity to honor the memories of loved ones. Jorge Calvillo shared, “I used to run a lot but haven’t in over 20 years. I’m running today in honor of my mom, who passed away from cancer in March of 2023.” Sharing this day with his two daughters, who were cheering from the sidelines, made it all the more meaningful. Similar in nature, many families and neighbors expressed their gratitude for being able to participate together, regardless of skill level, ability or age, and share their personal stories.
This event provided a heartfelt opportunity for everyone to honor someone special, turning moments of reflection into smiles and unity. Jerry Riles, the event’s MC, reflected on the memory of his brother and his own enthusiasm for serving the community, inspired by his brother’s legacy. He shared, “I love seeing the smiling faces of participants and witnessing the community coming together to celebrate their loved ones in such a meaningful and unique way.” This sense of community was equally valued by Concilio Latinx, a volunteer group from Wheeling High School dedicated to supporting events that celebrate Latinx culture—especially those that strengthen bonds within the local community. Jackie Camacho, staff mentor of the group shared, “We volunteer to support the community. Our group wants to volunteer and be involved in events that highlight Latino culture in our community.”
Day of the Dead 5K has been hosted for 5 years at the Wheeling Park District, and has offered a valuable opportunity to learn more about different cultures in the Wheeling Community while engaging in family fun activities. “For us, it is very important to maintain and share the traditions that our grandparents and our ancestors left us,” Ambrosio Martinez, lead member of the Aztec Dance Chicago group shared, “we remember those who have already left us, from whom we learned, from whom we have gained teachings.”
The District looks forward to bringing this memorable event to the community again in 2025 and extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who made it possible—from runners and walkers to vendors, sponsors, and dedicated volunteers. Together, the entire community created a beautiful day to honor loved ones, celebrate culture, and enjoy a memorable, fun-filled recreational experience.
