Family Aquatic Center FAQ

No outside food or drink is permitted at the Family Aquatic Center. There is a concession stand or you may reenter the same date of purchase to eat food off premise.

Coolers are not allowed at the Family Aquatic Center.

The Wheeling Park District Family Aquatic Center is always supervised by lifeguards during scheduled hours.  All lifeguards are licensed through the International Lifeguard Training Program by Jeff Ellis and Associates.

Yes, the Family Aquatic Center is a pay to enter facility. The pool offers a variety of non-aquatic amenities such as areas for sun tanning, grass areas, sand volleyball, and sand play areas. Even those not swimming must pay the admission.

Guests must be 48in to ride the waterslides.

Parents/guardians must be responsible for supervising their children. If your children are in the water, then you are in the water. Lifeguards are on duty to only enforce rules and respond in emergency situations. Children 9 and under must be accompanied by a chaperone 16 years or older.

  • Swimming accessories such as beach balls, diving rings, and other such items will be allowed in designated areas at the discretion of the manager. Examples of toys that are not allowed include noodles, rafts, tennis balls, Frisbees, water canons/guns, or any other hard toys.
  • S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation devices (PFDs) are allowed. Water wings and other non-Coast Guard approved PFDs are prohibited. Children wearing PFDs must remain within arm’s length of their guardian.
  • Lifejackets are available in the Lifeguard Office to sign out.
  • The Family Aquatic Center will close for cold weather, thunder, lightning, severe weather, or the imminent threat of severe weather.
  • If thunder is heard or lightening is spotted, the pools must close for at least a half hour.  Pools will remain closed until 30 minutes have passed without thunder being heard or lightening being spotted.
  • If the air temperature is below 68othe pools may close.  This depends on other factors including time of day, current pool attendance, perceived temperature, and amount of sunlight.

Family Aquatic Center Closing Information

Several criteria are taken into account when determining whether the aquatic center can open for public swimming. When the weather changes, we do our best to stay on top of the forecast and maximize the amount of open pool time. Depending on what time inclement weather takes place and the forecasted weather conditions, staff will reevaluate the closure and attempt to reopen when possible. Refunds will not be issued for facility closures.
Weather-related closures will be communicated through the Rainout Line. Choose how you’d like to be notified:

  • Download the app to your smartphone
  • Call the hotline number 847-241-4001 for a recorded update
The following conditions will result in an Aquatic Center closure:
  • Inclement Weather
    • Temperatures under 68 degrees
    • Severe weather, including heavy rain, which can impact visibility in the pool
    • Lightning or thunder, which can create hazardous conditions
  • Low attendance – Fewer than 25 patrons over a 30-minute timeframe
  • Safety Hazards – Any other condition that creates an unsafe swimming environment
